Combining the quick prototyping capabilities of the TETRIX® PRIME parts with the strength and ruggedness of the MAX parts, this unit focuses on activities and builds that might be used in manufacturing plants. Using an Arduino board and Arduino with ArduBlock software along with various sensors, students program the computer to accomplish tasks that might normally be found in a manufacturing environment. By combining parts from the two products, students build quick prototypes with the strength to accomplish automated activities that address STEM standards.

This three-week unit comes with 12 starter sets. During the unit, students will:

  • Work in teams of two or three students.
  • Utilize parts from both the PRIME and MAX product lines to build robots to complete various tasks that might occur in an automated factory.
  • Complete activities to build necessary skills for each task.
  • Receive a real-world challenge to complete using the skills learned after each set of activities.
  • Complete guided activities and a data sheet included in a logbook that has them gather data for evaluation and improvement of their robot.

Correlations to Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Math and Language Arts Standards, and ITEEA technology standards are included. This unit serves 24 students, and add-ons are available for classes larger than 24.

Using the TETRIX® PRIME R/C Starter Set and adding sensors and an Arduino UNO controller, this unit focuses on creating a robot to complete tasks without operator input. Using an Arduino board and ArduBlock software along with Ultrasonic and Line Finder sensors, students write programs to complete various tasks that increase in complexity. Students use PRIME parts to quickly prototype and test different configurations and overcome additional obstacles. STEM standards are addressed with the engaging activities provided in this unit.

This three-week unit comes with 12 starter sets. During the unit, students will:

  • Work in teams of two to three students.
  • Begin using R/C control and progress to autonomous operation.
  • Use the PRIME R/C Starter Set, additional controller, and sensors set to program a robot to complete tasks.
  • Learn the science behind how each of the sensors functions and how to program them to complete various tasks.
  • Learn to program the robot using ArduBlock and Arduino software.
  • Complete activities to build programming skills to control the robot and interact with sensors.
  • Complete a challenge to finish using the skills learned from the activities after each set of activities.
  • Complete guided activities and data sheets in the logbook that have students gather data for evaluation and improvement of their robot.

The principles of building a remote-controlled robot and using this robot to complete various engaging challenges are the focus of this STEM Unit. The TETRIX® PRIME R/C Starter Set is used for the basic building parts for students to construct various robots and complete challenges while addressing science, technology, engineering, math, and language arts standards. The PRIME building system enables students to quickly prototype a variety of robots, test them, and engineer them for improved performance.

9-week unit

OVERVIEW

In the Engineering Design & CAD course, students are introduced to computer-aided drafting and learn how to use it to design engineering projects. Working through the Introduction to Engineering Design with SolidWorks guide, students build a solid foundation in how to use the SolidWorks CAD program. They become familiar with the interface, understand the software’s function and how to draw and create parts and assemblies, and complete several exercises and projects. In Unit 2, students model a TETRIX® part and then use it to build and model a motorized chassis with wheels. Then, they design and build a robot that moves billiard balls to goals and another that completes a timed maze challenge. These activities help students understand how to apply the SolidWorks concepts and skills they have learned.

SAMPLE ACTIVITY

After learning how to design with the SolidWorks computer-aided drafting program in Unit 1, students make use of these practical skills in the Model TX activity. Here, young designers create a digital version of a physical model they built earlier using the TETRIX Building System.
